Kalamarie is a New York and London-based handbag and women’s accessories’ brand.
“We make our accessories from only the finest materials. Carefully sourced, lovingly treated, masterfully crafted”.
Behind the label, two sisters who came up with the idea for this brand rather incidentally one day, whilst having lunch together.
Both successful professionals, they had both been through the experience of departing from the loving family home to make their lives in foreign countries.
They both felt the urge to create something beautiful and unique, like the city in which they were born… the ancient Calamari, now Cartagena de Indias in Colombia, South America.
The concept behind the brand is a fusion of the mystical, colonial city that inspired the two sisters, with their experiences of living as professionals in the west. Bringing accessories that portray utmost sophistication, and yet that have a modern, urban edge.
Each of Kalamarie‘s handbags is crafted by hand, with individually chosen, ethically sourced, crocodile leather and smooth leather. Each color has been hand developed.
Their trademark gecko, as featured on all their handbags, is inspired by the ornate doorknockers of the vibrantly-colored colonial houses of Cartagena.
The colonial architecture of Cartagena, Colombia, and daily urban life in NYC and London.
We are two sisters. Each of us has a favourite from our current collection. Meli loves the Amélie Mini Box Bag in Cognac, Black, Pearl. Kara loves the Ede Satchel in Grey.
We love every aspect of what we do, but seeing a product in the flesh for the first time feels amazing. We also love being out and about and seeing people wearing our products.
Both of us have different professional backgrounds to design. Meli is an Economist by training and Kara is a Lawyer.
A handbag is probably the most personal accessory a woman wears, so handbag essentials change from woman to woman. Our absolute essentials are: A lipstick (which our handbags have a compartment for), wallet, keys, hand antibac, tissues.
Waking up, usually with a new design idea in mind!
