In 1983, at the age of 23, Bert van Son  moved to China to get a job in the textile industry. There, he learned a lot from the Chinese culture but also saw firsthand the effects of today’s fast fashion industry on factory workers: the labourers were pressured to quickly produce cheap garments risking their safety and health.

Ever since, he knew that one-day in his life he was going to do things differently.

It started in 2013, with the introduction of Lease A Jeans which is an innovative approach offering guilt-free consumption.

Together with a dedicated team, he turned MUD Jeans into a sustainable clothing brand that won several awards, such as the Sustainability Leadership Awards. MUD Jeans is the only brand that works completely according to the principles of the circular economy.

To us it does’t make sense to keep jeans you don’t longer wear in your wardrobe.

Nor does it make sense to throw them away. Because we all know that our resources aren’t unlimited.

The circular economy comes with a solution. See waste as as a source of growth to make something new. So, that’s what we do. We create new jeans from our materials.

The best part is that we make an environmental impact by cutting back on resource consumption.

// INTERVIEW with Dion Vijgeboom, co-founder Mud Jeans

we dream of a world without waste

1.Where do you seek inspiration for your collections?

Since we want our denim and sweaters to last – we design our products as a mix between american – almost workwear – vintage and a minimalistic Scandinavian elegance.

Dutch design comes in play at our innovative material usage.

2.Which one is your favourite piece from collection and why?

For women that will definitely be the Boyfriend Basin in Stone Black; it’s just in. Finished without any chemicals and still a true black denim

3.What are some of the obstacles to creating more sustainable products?

Aligning the different links in the supply chain; each component involves a different complexity when it comes to making it sustainable.

Nonetheless many steps have been taken in recent years and months and exciting things are about to happen soon for sure!

4.Do you think that ethics and sustainability are just a trend for the fashion industry?

Certainly not! It has been a trend and even a marketing tool in recent years – but more and more companies arise that find their origin in this philosophy.

But above all: we have no choice – we need to change the habit of consumerism.

5.What little things do you do in your everyday life to improve the environment?

(obviously) separating waste, use of bicycle and public transport, doing laundry with cold water and explaining to family and friends how fast fashion impacts the environment.

6. Your favourite moment of the day?

Early, early mornings! Quiet and therefore extremely suitable to get lots of things done.
